On Madeira, vines are grown in small earthen terraces called “poios,” supported by earth walls on the steep, often inaccessible, mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil and climate, combined with the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unparalleled distinction of Madeira Wine over time. In addition to these factors, 30 varieties are highlighted for the production of this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
