The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years later. On Madeira Island, vineyards are cultivated in small plots of earth, known as “poios”, supported by stone walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The unique soil and climate of Madeira Island, as well as the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to the unparalleled distinction of Madeira wine over time. Beyond these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used in the production of this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
