Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On Madeira, vineyards are grown in small plots of earth called “poios,” supported by terracing walls on steep mountain slopes that are often hard to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production methods and the grape varieties cultivated, have given Madeira wine its unrivaled distinction over the ages. Beyond these factors, thirty grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
