One of the oldest Madeira wines in the world. From the Terrantez grape, this Madeira wine dates back to the 1795 harvest, bottled by the Madeira Wine Company, a reputed early‑18th‑century wine merchant of Madeira. With the decline of sugar production at the end of the 16th century, cane fields began to be replaced by vineyards, giving rise to the so‑called “Wine Cycle” that gained international fame and enabled the rise of a new social class. With the resurgence of trade treaties with England, the island saw the arrival of important English merchants who eventually came to dominate the increasingly important wine trade. English merchants settled in Funchal from the 17th century, establishing themselves in the markets of North America, the Antilles, and England itself. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the “wine city” outshone the “sugar city.” And on 4 July 1776, Madeira wine was chosen to celebrate the United States of America’s independence.
