It is said that the chief mentor of Madeira wine was Prince Henry, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Candida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on Madeira Island, and this proved a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as a refined beverage and even used as a perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar is such that it is frequently referenced in history, art, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not match the image shown. (Illustration only)
