Description

The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira Island, vines are grown in small plots of land known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on mountain slopes that are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as the production process and the grapes cultivated, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unmatched distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia. (illustrative image only)
