Romeu Martins' roots lie in Barrô, Aguada de Baixo, and Aguada de Cima, villages in the northern Bairrada region. His father was a mechanic and his mother a seamstress. Like many humble Portuguese, his parents were forced to emigrate, and for that reason, Romeu Martins was born in South Africa. He returned to Bairrada at the age of two and went to live with his grandfather, Aristides, a master of clay and the general foreman of the famous Cerâmica do Bicarenho. His grandfather taught him the secrets of his craft and the agricultural work, especially the cultivation of vines and the art of winemaking. To be able to recreate the "tinto clarinho" (a light red wine) that his grandfather Aristides made, which was known as "palheto" and was renowned in the area, he needed to have vineyards similar to his grandfather's. However, those had been passed down to his uncles through inheritance. Therefore, the first step Romeu Martins took was to find a traditional, old-style vineyard that he could cultivate. And so, Malápio was born!
