The Manz family moved to the quiet village of Cheleiros in the western part of Portugal in 2004 and quickly fell in love with the people and the place. The region’s wine‑making heritage—countryside scenery and forgotten customs—soon captured André Manz, who, with the help and advice of locals, decided to experiment with producing wine for personal consumption. After identifying the grape varieties that would be planted in an abandoned vineyard tucked inside an orchard, he discovered that one of the varieties was practically extinct in Portugal: Jampal. Very few producers currently pursue this grape, given its low profitability, but André Manz chose not to follow anyone else’s footsteps—only his own. Today, the expansion of his business now covers three wine‑producing regions—Douro, Lisbon, and the Setúbal Peninsula—and reaches 25 countries.
