The Marqués de Murrieta’s winemaking company began at the same time as the Rioja region itself. Don Luciano Murrieta, a visionary with a deep love for wine, applied Bordeaux techniques to create Rioja’s first wine in 1852, aiming to preserve it for posterity. In 1870 he relocated the estate to Castle Ygay, where the story of this remarkable, historic, and world‑renowned producer truly began, with the Marqués’ headquarters declared a museum in 2019. The property sits amid 300 hectares of fertile ground ideal for vines, and in 2011 launched a renewal programme that incorporated the latest enological technology to uphold its unique values.
