The origin of the Marqués de Murrieta wine company is also the starting point of the Rioja region. Don Luciano Murrieta, a visionary with a deep passion for wine, applied techniques learned in Bordeaux, producing the first Rioja wine in 1852 with the aim of ensuring its lasting legacy. Years later, in 1870, he moved his business to the Castle Ygay, where the story of this incredible, historic and world‑renowned producer truly began; the Marqués de Murrieta headquarters were declared a museum in 2019. The estate sits on 300 hectares of fertile land, ideal for vine cultivation, and in 2011 it undertook a renovation project that incorporated the latest enological technology to preserve the unique values of the wines.
