The name José Maria da Fonseca is closely linked to Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point of being almost a synonym for this great wine that is born in the Setúbal region. In truth, some of the best muscatels in the world are born at the behest of this old family company. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by José Maria da Fonseca himself, who had just finished his studies at the University of Coimbra as a mathematician. He established the company, and 15 years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was born. While JMF is primarily known for its great muscatels, it also created timeless table wine brands such as Periquita, founded in 1850, and Lancers, launched in 1944. JMF’s muscatels are rare relics that are released in small batches and are a must-visit stop. The oldest muscatels in the region belong exclusively to this company and are absolutely unforgettable, rivaling the best fortified wines in the world such as Port and Madeira.
