Description

In the early 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo region with the goal of entering the cork trade. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds bought the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vineyards were planted, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional wine cellar and a distillery, which still today produces Mouchão brandy. Today, the Herdade do Mouchão continues to be managed and worked by descendants of the original family, and the entire winemaking process remains virtually unchanged, preserving the traditional hand‑harvest and fermentation of grapes in stone vats, using foot‑pumping. These techniques, together with the long‑standing success story of the Herdade do Mouchão, keep this wine‑making company close to what old wines once were. (Illustrative image only)
