The château was bought in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately changed its name from Château Mouton de Pauillac to the present Château Mouton Rothschild. It survived some turbulent years until 1922, when Baron Philippe de Rothschild took control of the estate and, in 1924, launched the first bottlings under the restored name. Today, Mouton Cadet is run by the grandson, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, who continues to ensure the highest quality of wines produced on the estate, preserving the Bordeaux terroir in each bottle. From the 1945 harvest onwards, already recognized as a great wine, all labels have been illustrated by celebrated contemporary artists such as Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. As recognition of its stature, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich yet fine and velvety when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot in proportions that vary year to year—though Cabernet Sauvignon remains predominant—many of these wines are among the world’s most sought‑after and are considered some of the best ever produced.
