Château Mouton was purchased in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately renamed it from Château Mouton de Pauillac to its current name, Château Mouton Rothschild. After a period of turbulence, the property passed into the hands of Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1922, who quickly restored the château’s name and began the first wine bottlings in 1924. Today, Mouton Cadet is managed by his grandson, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, who continues to ensure the highest quality of wines produced on the estate, preserving the Bordeaux terroir in every bottle. Following its rebirth, the château’s first bottling in 1924 marked the beginning of a new era. Starting with the 1945 harvest, when Château Mouton was recognized as a great wine, every label began to be illustrated by celebrated contemporary artists—Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. In recognition of its status, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. The wines are powerful and rich, yet possess a sense of finesse and a velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot in proportions that vary year to year, Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates. Over the years, many wines have been born at this house, and countless stories have passed through the magnificent château’s doors.
