“O Pai Horácio” – a truly evocative name, and a wine that clearly enjoyed a spirited discussion with the Douro’s very slopes. This special vintage, crafted from ancient Portuguese varieties including Sousão, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and a well-narrated Aragonez, is a celebration in a bottle. Vinified with minimal intervention, utilising traditional granite lagares and mechanical treading, it brilliantly captures the distinctive schist and granite terroir where the vines climb from 160 to 650 metres. Twelve months in oak barrels, combined with careful fermentation and malolactic conversion, delivers a harmonious balance. It’s no surprise this wine garnered gold from the Credit Agricole and accolades from Grandes Escolhas – a little decanting is certainly recommended, particularly when paired with a hearty roast.
