The terroir of Mareuil-sur-Ay, dominated by Pinot Noir, is clearly evident in this cuvée, which delivers an excellent balance between structure, body, and a long finish. Between 20 and 30 % of the reserve wines in this champagne are aged in barrels using the solera method, so the older wines don’t lose their freshness. As a curious note, the name Royal Reserve refers to the ancestors of the Philipponnat family—vine growers, wine merchants, and winemakers who historically served King Louis XIV, the Sun King, as well as magistrates and presidents of Ay’s municipal council.
