In the nineteenth century, the catastrophic appearance of powdery mildew, downy mildew, and phylloxera forced grape growers to resort to intercropping between vines and olive trees to survive. But in the twentieth century, the establishment of cooperative wineries gave them new energy and revived the culture of grape cultivation and wine production. It is in this context that AcR was founded in 1956 by a group of fourteen viticulturists, confirming the wine potential of Alentejo in the 1980s. Today the winery is one of the largest wine producers in the Alentejo region, bringing together around two hundred producers—about 95% of the Redondo sub‑region. (Illustrative image only)
