This Carolina from Casa de Vale das Vinhas is clearly a wine that’s taken its time maturing – a good 30 years, judging by the complexity. Having spent time in both French and Austrian oak, it’s a remarkably rich wine, perhaps a little indulgent, but with a beautiful Douro terroir expression and the undeniable elegance of its native grape varieties. Seriously, it’s begging for a hearty beef stew – or, if you’re feeling contemplative, a long, slow sip and some serious soul-searching.
