Originating from almost century‑old vines and yielding only a scant 10 hl / ha, the red Vinha de Lordelo was described by Eric Boschman, the Belgian wine guru, as sitting between the sublime and the sumptuous—at the level of the great Bordeaux estates, between Latour and Haut‑Brion. It possesses a bewildering complexity, yet its fruit makes even Australian Syrahs seem austere. “It’s magnificent!” There had long been a desire to pinpoint the origins of the key characteristics that define Quinta da Gaivosa. In 2003, an additional effort finally allowed the isolated vinification of the smaller components of the whole, revealing, in elemental form, the various nuances and particularities of the Gaivosas. What was once deeply familiar now had a name. It was in this context that this wine was born. Vinha de Lordelo is, “by chance,” the oldest vineyard on the estate—a little madness, perhaps—but Alves de Sousa now takes great pleasure in sharing it.
