A wine with an intense, bright red hue. It offers aromas of red fruit, accented by spice notes from the oak. The palate is rich, with firm tannins; Touriga Nacional brings elegance, Touriga Franca adds fruity nuances, and Tinta Roriz supplies body, leaving a persistent, tasty finish. Quinta da Vacaria, one of the region’s oldest estates (first recorded in 1616), sits on the banks of the Douro near Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated region. Here, Rabelo boats docked to load barrels of port wine, which were then transported to Gaia at the river’s mouth and sold wholesale worldwide. Those wooden barrels, unmarked with the producer’s seal, carried the wine under the foreign merchants’ labels, some of whom later earned considerable prestige. (Illustrative image)
