The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first record dating back to 1616), is situated on the banks of the Douro River next to the city of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated region, the Douro. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load baskets full of Port wine and carry them to Gaia, at the mouth of the river, where they were sold wholesale to the world, leaving behind their hidden identity as these wooden crates were not even stamped with the producer’s seal. At the destination, the wine was bottled and labelled with the brand of the foreign merchants who bought it, some of whom went on to gain considerable prestige. (illustrative image only)
