Quinta de Foz de Arouce is situated in the municipality of Lousã, within the Beiras region. It is surrounded by the foothills of the Serras da Lousã and Penela and is watered by the Arouce and Ceira rivers, where the former drains. Old documents in the house record the property as belonging to the family since the eighteenth century, although some buildings are older, as the original house was consumed by fire twice. The chapel adjoining the house was founded by a Brief Pontifical of Pope Benedict XIII on 24‑08‑1724. Vine cultivation has been present in the area since the Visigothic occupation of the peninsula, as several legends claim that King Arunce stored wine and other precious goods in his Lousã castle. The estate’s wine production intertwines with its history and land demarcation, making it today, along with its cellar, the only such establishment known in the region. (Illustrative image)
