This Jaen from Quinta do Perdigão is a delightfully reliable adventure. The colour – a deep ruby hinting at a perfectly spent vintage – is immediately followed by an intense aroma of wild blackberry, blackcurrant and dried plum, with a surprisingly elegant touch of Provençal herbs and a whisper of tobacco, as if drawn from an old cedar chest. On the palate, the wine’s vibrancy is matched by a remarkable smoothness, a result of winemaking that clearly benefited from a little divine intervention. Seriously delicious with grilled beef, perhaps a hearty roast, to accentuate the richness.
