The Poço do Lobo Estate was acquired by Caves São João in 1971 and is a rustic property covering about 37 hectares, located in the small locality of Pocariça in the municipality of Cantanhede. After the acquisition, the estate underwent restructuring with the planting of new grape varieties alongside the traditional ones, to innovate without ever losing the link to its forebears. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on marketing fine wines from the Douro and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest still‑active family wine company in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, following the ban on producing port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began trading table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of Bairrada’s most celebrated wine brands, “Frei João”, was launched, and later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand emerged from the demarcated Dão region.
