Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, it remains the oldest family‑owned winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition of producing Port wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began marketing table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the region’s most celebrated wine brands emerged – “Frei João” – and a little later the brand “Porta dos Cavaleiros” from the demarcated Dão region.
