Description

The Quinta de Foz de Arouce is located in the municipality of Lousã, in the Beiras region. It is surrounded by the fortifications of the Lousã and Penela mountain ranges and is watered by the Arouce and Ceira rivers, where the former empties into the latter. Old documents in the house record the property as belonging to the family since the 18th century, though some outbuildings are older, as the original house was burned twice. The chapel adjoining the house was founded during the brief pontificate of Pope Benedict XIII on 24 August 1724. Vine cultivation has been known in this area since the Visigothic occupation of the peninsula, as various legends say that King Arunce stored wine and other precious goods in his castle in Lousã. The wine produced on the estate blends with the property’s own history and boundaries, and today, like the cellar, it is the only one known in the region. (illustrative image only)
