However, a new era of excellence began in 1996, when Cristiano van Zeller acquired the family estate from his wife, Joana Lemos van Zeller. Over more than two decades, Cristiano has led a work of dedication and passion, creating unique wines of recognized quality both in Portugal and abroad. The acquisition of Quinta Vale D. Maria by the Aveleda group in 2017 represents the continuation of this legacy, adding a long‑term vision focused on excellence and sustainability. This philosophy is rooted in a passion for every detail, starting with the hand‑picking of the best bunches, continuing with the use of traditional winemaking methods, and ending with careful selection of the finest French oak barrels.
