The Aveleda gardens — laid out in the second half of the 19th century by the Guedes family on a 14-hectare estate in Penafiel — are among the most beautiful in northern Portugal: serpentine paths, baroque fountains, a goat-tower folly, lakes, peacocks and centuries-old camellias. The estate is the historic home of Casal Garcia Vinho Verde, the country's best-selling white wine, but the visitor focus is the romantic landscape, the historic family chapel and tastings of the estate's increasingly serious portfolio of Alvarinho, Loureiro and traditional-method sparkling. A garden-party atmosphere unique among Portuguese wineries.
