Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—popularly known as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great deal of confusion at its inception, as people mixed it up with the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It was through popular speech and commercial slang that the Pombal‑inspired Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as a trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually turned into a purely patrimonial company and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
