Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion between the two Royal Companies at its inception: the new one and the old Royal Company of Port Wine. Through the popular voice and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia founded in 1756 began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as a trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial society, later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
