Description

Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—commonly known by locals as “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. Through the people’s voice and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and used that designation as a trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became merely a heritage society and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
