Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal—locally nicknamed the “Royal Winery”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombaline Royal Company founded in 1756 began to be known as the “Royal Old Company” and adopted that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Royal Winery, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually became merely a heritage society before being acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
