Founded in 1889, the Royal North Portugal Winery—colloquially known by locals as the “Royal Winery”—created a great confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new one and the old Royal Port Wine Company. Through popular usage and commercial slang, the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be called the “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as a brand. The century‑old Royal Winery, created under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial society and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
