Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great deal of confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It was through the popular voice and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Company, founded in 1756, began to be known as the “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that designation as a trade name. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually became a purely patrimonial society before being acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, holder of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
