Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola,” initially caused a great confusion between the two Royal Companies—the new one and the Old Royal Company of Port Wine. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia founded in 1756 began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and used that designation as a trade name. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, gradually became merely a patrimonial society and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
