Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known as “Real Vinícola”—caused a stir at its inception, blurring the lines between the new and the older Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through local slang and popular usage, the Pombalina Real Companhia, established in 1756, came to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquês de Pombal, gradually turned into a purely patrimonial entity and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
