Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola”—initially caused a great confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Over time, the Pombalina Real Companhia, established in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” through popular usage and commercial slang, adopting that name as a brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, founded under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial company and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of prominent Port wine labels such as Taylor’s.
