Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially called “Real Vinícola”—caused great confusion at its inception, as it was mistaken for the new Royal Company of Porto Wines versus the old one. Through the people’s voice and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Company, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a commercial brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over time a purely patrimonial entity, eventually acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
