Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – known locally as the “Real Vinícola” – initially caused confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the Old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It was through popular usage and commercial slang that the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its commercial brand. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
