Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially called the “Real Vinícola”—created a huge mix‑up at its inception, confusing the new and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. Over time, the 1756‑old Pombalino Real Companhia began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its commercial brand. The century‑old winery, founded under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port labels such as Taylor’s. The bottling year may not match the illustrative image.
