Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known locally as the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Real Company of Porto wines. Through popular vernacular and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Company founded in 1756 began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as a trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over time a purely patrimonial firm and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port brands such as Taylor’s.
