Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It is through the people's voice and commercial slang that the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a commercial brand. The centennial Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial company before being acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
