Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola of northern Portugal—colloquially known by locals as the “Real Vinícola”—initially caused confusion between the new Royal Company and the older Royal Company of Porto Wines. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia, established in 1756, came to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity before being acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine labels such as Taylor’s.
