Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great deal of confusion between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Wine Company of Porto. It was through popular speech and commercial slang that the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, became known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a commercial brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, gradually turned into a purely patrimonial society and was later acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port brands such as Taylor’s.
