Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola of Northern Portugal—colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola”—created a great confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Royal Company of Port wine. Through popular vernacular and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as a brand. The centennial Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owners of major port brands such as Taylor’s.
