Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – known colloquially as the “Real Vinícola” – caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Company of Porto Wines. Through popular usage and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Company founded in 1756 began to be called the “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that designation as its brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
