Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal – colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola” – initially caused confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new and the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be referred to as “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as its trademark. The centenary Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
