Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—known locally as the “Real Vinícola”—initially caused confusion between the new and the old Royal Companies, the latter being the historic Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. Through popular usage and marketing lingo, the Pombalina Real Companhia, established in 1756, became known as “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as a trade mark. The century‑old Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquis of Pombal, evolved into a heritage company and was later acquired by the Fladgate Partnership, owners of major Port brands such as Taylor’s.
