Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola of Northern Portugal—known colloquially among locals as the “Real Vinícola”—created a huge confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Porto Wines. It was through the voice of the people and commercial slang that the Pombaline Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that designation as a trademark. The centennial Real Vinícola, created under the patronage of the Marquês de Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial company, being acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
