Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—commonly known by the locals as the “Real Vinícola”—initially caused a great deal of confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new one and the old Royal Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It was through popular usage and commercial slang that the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be known as “Real Companhia Velha” and to use that name as a commercial brand. The century‑old Real Vinícola, established under the auspices of the Marquês de Pombal, gradually became merely a patrimonial society and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
