Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal—colloquially called the “Real Vinícola”—caused a great mix‑up at its birth, confusing the new Royal Company with the old Real Companhia dos Vinhos do Porto. It was through popular usage and commercial slang that the 1756‑old Pombalina Real Companhia began to be called “Real Companhia Velha” and adopted that name as its brand. Over the years the centenary Real Vinícola, created under the Marquis of Pombal’s patronage, became merely a patrimonial entity before being acquired by the well‑known Fladgate Partnership, owner of major port brands such as Taylor’s.
